Does anyone know what the CRA rules are for emailing PDFs of a client's tax return that is showing their SIN number?

I have heard mixed thoughts on what the rules are about privacy and emailing PDFs of tax returns to clients.

Profile has a feature that password protects a PDF but I'm not sure what exactly is allowed to be emailed.  Does anyone have any ideas?


CRA does not regulate what information is transmitted to a client and how it is transmitted.

Privacy falls under a completely different Act and is not related to CRA in any way but does not regulate at this time what information can be shared by email with a client about their own personal information.

Best practice is not to email documents that contain personal information such as SIN numbers as it is not a very secure method. We require express permission from our clients to email them documents that contain their personal information after advising them it is not a sercure method of providing such information. Password protection on the Profile File however obviously would help that a great deal but I would still advise them.
