Part-year resident emigrated
I never trust overrides in Profile, but I think I have to in this case. Hoping somebody can provide some insight on the following situation.
Person lived and worked in Ontario, Canada for part of the year and then left. All of their income during the year for all countries is reported on a T4.
On the info page I selected the following options:
- Ontario for "Province of Residency"
- Date of departure filled out for the date they left
- Yes for "Prorate non-refundable tax credits for part year resident"
- Yes for "Are you a non-resident"
- Resident for "Residency Status"
Number 1 is selected this way based on http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/nnrsdnts/ndvdls/lvng-eng.html which says "For the tax year that you leave Canada, use the general income tax and benefit package for the province or territory where you resided on the date you left Canada."
Number 3 is overridden as this is the only way to get the basic personal amount to be prorated as explained here: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/international-non-residents/individuals-leaving-entering-canada-non-residents/federal-non-refundable-tax-credits-newcomers-emigrants.html
Number 5 is overridden from "Non-resident" as the auditor message says "Select 'Resident' to ensure accurate tax calculations for an emigrant."
As mentioned at the top I don't trust overrides. Can anybody let me know if there is a way to do this without the overrides or if you see any errors in how this has been done?
